How much longer will we wait on our first Black President? How long before we can see ourselves in such prestige positions of responsibility? The answers are really up to us. Of course, we’re getting close with people like Colin Powell. But how long before we will have more than just one or two likely candidates to choose from? I remember watching as Rev. Jesse Jackson and even more recently, Rev. Al Sharpton ran for Presidency. These men, although they did not win, withstood much opposition from not only other races, but our own. Still they stood tall, and never gave up on the dreams that they represented. When can we expect to see all of our children follow the influences of men like Colin Powell, Rev. Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson? If we do not change the way we raise our children, men and women like these will be far and few between.
