Who is she?

MARY ROBINSON

After attending Dublin University, Trinity College, Robinson began confronting many liberal issues, such as women having the right to sit on juries and the right to having the avail-ability of contraceptives. For many years Mary Robinson served as the legal advisor for the Campaign of Homosexual Law Reform. A member of the Labour Party, Robinson soon became known for her Feminist and Liberal viewpoints. She opened her arms to Catholics, Protestants, Gays and the downtrodden. Throughout her career span she has worked to bring positive change to the world.

As President of Ireland, Robinson became the first head of state to visit both Rwanda and Somalia in the aftermaths of their crisis. From Somalia she received the CARE Humanitarian award in recognition of her efforts. In 1997 just 4 months before the end of her term, Robinson resigned to become the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. During this time she was credited with "Putting Human-Rights on the map". She changed the priorities to emphasize Human Rights within her office. She has lead the fight against racism, racial discrimination, intolerance, and xenophobia. Robinson has also been very outspoken in her criticism of the U.S. in regards to the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Even voicing concern over issues such as the death penalty.

Currently, Mary Robinson is the Director of the Ethical Globalization Initiative. Robinson and her staff are now monitoring Human Rights or providing assistance to over twenty countries. It is clear that she will continue to challenge the intolerant views of the world.
